Villa to sign for Barcelona

April 30th 2010 18:15
Barcelona have reportedly signed Valencia striker David Villa, according to reports in Spain.

Villa, who is arguably the best forward in the world, will move to Catalunya for reportedly 40 million Euros, while Bojan and Alexander Hleb could head the other way.

Negotiations are said to have taken place between the clubs and a verbal agreement was reached this week.

Villa was close to joining Barcelona last season, but the deal fell through, and Pep Guardiola opted, instead, for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Real Madrid, also, were linked with the forward, but chose Frenchman Karim Benzema after failing to agree a transfer fee with Valencia.

Best Forward in the World

If true, the move of Villa to Barcelona may prove to be the most decisive of all summer transfers. Guardiola regards Villa as the best finisher in the world at the moment, and he will hope Villa will be the man to retain their Champions League crown, which they abdicated earlier this week after a semi-final defeat to Inter Milan.

The performances and fitness of Ibrahimovic has been under close scrutiny this year. In truth, the big Swede has flattered to deceive and, despite an encouraging start to the season, was found missing in both legs against Inter.

These were the games he was bought for and, while he didn’t look fully fit, his attitude was poor, and he seemed to be disinterested.

Villa will be the signing to fully restore Barca to the same power as before.

They have struggled to score as many goals to the trophy laden campaign in 2009, mainly down to the absence of Samuel Eto, but Villa is an fantastic finisher, and he can also play a bit, as well.

With the amount of chances Barca creates, Villa should prosper in his new club and lead them to glory in all fronts.

All the fallen European Champions need now is to prize Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal back to the Nou Camp. It would cost them around £50 million for the midfielder, but Barca, like Real Madrid, can afford to spend upwards of £100 million, due to their TV deals.

If Fabregas was bought he would be seen as the long term replacement for Xavi, who approaching 30, although a long way off retirement, may slow down in a couple of years.

The two could, at the moment, form a midfield partnership, and then move Andres Iniesta from the middle to wide left, where he has proven to be as equally as effective.

A front five of Xavi, Fabregas, Iniesta, Messi and Villa would be frightening, and would certainly appease the fans that had any doubts or anger over Wednesday night’s failure.
