Top 10 Bosmans for 2010
May 5th 2010 13:41
Ever since Bosman came into force in 1995, clubs and players alike have sought to take advantage of the ruling.
The opportunity to steal one of Europe’s finest from your biggest rival for absolutely nothing has given a whole new meaning to the transfer system.
Now with debts in the Premiership larger than ever before, and finances tight at many clubs, free transfers are being looked upon as a way of strengthening the squad without it costing too much.
Here, I take a look at some of the players that many Premiership managers will be looking to make a move for under freedom of contract.
Marouane Chamakh
The Moroccan forward has stated his desire to leave Bordeaux this summer, with England likely to be his next destination.
Ten goals in Ligue 1 may not sound too prolific, but, more impressively, he has bagged five goals in the Champions League and was instrumental in Bordeaux’s progress to the Quarter-Finals of the competition.
Arsenal look set to snap up the 26 year old, but he could still be on the radar of the likes of Liverpool and Spurs if the deal falls through.
Joe Cole
Probably the pick of the bunch
Cole has spent most of this season’s campaign on the sidelines with injury and, because of this, Chelsea waited until he proved his fitness before offering him a new deal
This deal has not been accepted by the England Internationalist because of a wage dispute, and it appears the two parties are a long way off agreeing anything.
If Cole does decide to move on, expect both Manchester clubs to battle it out for his signature, especially if City qualify for the Champions League.
Morten Gamst Pedersen
Pederson has been with Blackburn since 2004, but looks set to leave after failing to agree a new deal with the Ewood Park outfit.
A proven Premiership player, and often the scorer of some brilliant goals, Pederson will surely be on the radar of many Premiership clubs.
And, at 28, he still has the pace and fitness to be a success where ever he ends up.
Celtic were linked with the Norwegian in January. However, it is more likely he will remain in England.
Jermaine Beckford
Beckford will leave Leeds United this summer, even if the Yorkshire club gain promotion into the Championship.
Having scored 30 goals this campaign, he must be desperate to step up a level.
Although there are lingering doubts whether he can prove himself in the Premiership, he has been impressive in Leeds’ FA Cup run, which included scoring the winner against Manchester United.
Newcastle were linked, but it is Everton who appear favourites to sign the 26 year old.
Marko Pantelic
Pantelic looks ready to leave Ajax after spending only one year in Holland, and Liverpool have been linked with the Serbian striker.
A proven goal scorer where ever he has been, Pantelic managed to score 16 goals in 25 appearances for the Amsterdam club this campaign.
His record in Germany with Hertha Berlin was just as impressive, scoring 45 times in 114 games.
Schalke has been strongly linked with the Serb, but if a top Premiership club comes calling, he may move west.
Kim Kallstrom
The Swedish midfielder has been a standout with club side Lyon since his move to France in 2006.
Described by many as a box to box midfielder, Kallstrom is versatile and can also play on the left wing.
His left foot can be deadly, and he also has a fantastic cross and can be a danger at set pieces.
At 27, Kallstrom may feel it is time to move to a bigger league, and he would be an undisputed success with the majority of Premiership clubs.
Kris Boyd
The Rangers forward has a proven 25 goal plus season strike rate in the SPL, but doubts remain over his ability to replicate this in the Premiership.
Due to the Ibrox club’s precarious financial situation, Boyd has yet to agree a new contract with his boyhood heroes, preferring, instead, to wait until the end of the season.
That end is nigh, and Boyd may feel it is time to move on to a new challenge after winning his second championship in a row.
Birmingham and Aston Villa have both been linked.
Francois Clerc
The French right back has been with Lyon for nearly a decade and has been a consistent performer in this time.
Jostling for the defensive role with Anthony Réveillère for a few years now has allowed Clerc to adapt to a right midfield slot in an attempt to see more game time.
He looks set to leave the Stade Gerland, as, at 27, he feels he needs to be a regular starter for his club.
Throw in 13 international caps for France, Clerc will surely be on the radar off many English clubs.
Hamit Altintop
Altintop, like Cole, is one of the best free transfers around.
The Turkish internationalist was instrumental in his country’s progress to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, and he was named in UEFA’s official 23 man squad for the team of the tournament.
His versatility is also vital, and he is able to play in an attacking or defensive role in the middle of the park.
Despite appearances for Bayern Munich being limited this year due to the form of Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben, Altintop impressed in the Champions League semi-final against Lyon.
Joe Ledley
The Welsh midfielder is stalling on a new deal with Cardiff until he knows which division they will be playing in next year.
A play-off place has been secured, but even if they do win promotion via this way, Ledley may decide to move on because of Cardiff’s weak financial position.
Able to play anywhere across the left hand side of the pitch, as well as the centre of midfield, his experience at International level , even at only 23, will be appealing to his suitors.
