Spurs Go Marchin On
May 6th 2010 20:36
Tottenham Hotspur will be England’s fourth representative in the Champions League next season, if they can navigate through the qualifiers.
It is always nice to see another team do well and enjoy a degree of success, although this is mainly down to the failures of Liverpool than anything Spurs have actually done.
Premature
However, the celebrations at full-time in Eastlands were a tad over the top. The players were jumping for joy and screaming as if they had just won the Champions League when, in fact, they still have to qualify for the group stages.
I remember the days when winning something was the true mark of achievement, not finishing fourth place. Put it this way: Spurs finished in the top 20% of the league table. Not exactly something to be dancing in the streets about, is it?
It was something similar when Hearts split the Old Firm in Scotland back in 2006. However, the difference here was that this feat is some sort of achievement, and they also won the Scottish Cup, so they did have reasonable grounds for celebration.
However, some members of the Scottish media had presumed they qualified for the Champions League, forgetting they would be un-seeded in the qualifiers, and they would eventually succumb to AEK Athens.
I bet they feel obtuse now when they played the Champions League music the night they secured second place.
Spurs may be forced to yield to the same fate as the Gorgie Boys.
They will only have to face the one qualifier, but it is still unclear if they will be seeded for this. If they are, they may face the likes of Celtic, Sampdoria or Real Mallorca.
If they are unlucky and forced to enlist with the aforementioned teams, Sevilla, Ajax or Zenit St Petersburg could be lying in wait.
Either way, it is going to be tough, but expect two dramatic matches in which SKY build it up to be the biggest game football has ever seen.
