Chelsea - Champions
May 10th 2010 18:59
Chelsea wrapped up their third Premiership title in style when they defeated a hapless Wigan 8-0.
In truth, the score didn’t surprise anyone, especially as Wigan were down to 10 men for most of the match when Gary Caldwell was sent-off.
Chelsea deserve to be champions. They have led the way throughout the campaign, and only a slight blip in March saw them toppled from their prominent position.
They also defeated Manchester United in both encounters this season and probably deserved to do so.
Man Utd weren’t quite at the races this time. Injures to their defence throughout the year meant their form at large was inconsistent.
This was rectified by the blistering form by Wayne Rooney in 2010, but once he was inevitably injured, his teams’ deficiencies were shown up once again.
For the last few years, many commentators, including myself, saw them as a one man team in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo.
This time around it is Wayne Rooney who appears to hold the sole responsibility of leading Sir Alex Ferguson’s troops to success.
He failed, however, and Ferguson must now spend, if he can, and build for next season.
Chelsea, also, cannot take this success for granted, and John Terry has already indicated to his manager, Carlos Ancelotti that they must bring in fresh new talent to defend their title.
An ageing squad proved it was not capable of fighting on two fronts this year – domestically and in the continent.
The Champions League is the prize Roman Abramovich is desperate to land, and, if he is to do so, he will have to spend big again.
The likes of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are much improved sides, and Barcelona and Real Madrid are only going to get stronger.
So despite the undoubted success the Stamford Bridge club have experienced recently, football never sleeps, and they will have to strengthen if they are to challenge for all honours once again.
Meanwhile, Barcelona and Inter Milan are within touching distance in reclaiming their domestic crown.
Barcelona won a crucial match away to Sevilla - 3-2, and only now have to beat Valladolid if they are to prevent big spending Real Madrid from stealing the championship.
Inter defeated Chievo by the odd goal in seven and, with Roma only two points behind, will have to close Serie A out at the weekend.
They will then take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final a week later in their bid for a second European Cup.
