BIZARRE SOCCER SCENARIO'S
So, you think you know a lot about soccer rules?
The laws of FIFA are brief but sufficient, as a large part of refereeing is exercising judgement.
Here's some questions and multiple answers.
And the real answers and explanations as to why!
1. You're refereeing a game. Team A is playing against Team B. It is a nice day out and the park allows dogs, so a fan of Team A has brought their golden retriever. All of a sudden, the dog runs on to the field, steals the ball from a player, and moves it down the field until the ball goes out on the touchline. When the pooch has been removed, how do you restart the game?
Direct free kick for Team B
Dropped Ball
Throw-In
Indirect free kick for Team B
Answer:
Dropped Ball.
The correct answer is dropped ball. According to FIFA law, a stoppage of play that is not mentioned in the laws of the game is restarted with a dropped ball.
2. Team A is setting up for a free kick. A defender goes to kick the ball, but he realizes that his kick isn't very powerful. He turns around and passes back to the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper, caught off guard is unable to save the ball as it rolls into the goal. What's the call?
No goal; a goal kick is taken
However unfortunate, it's an own goal. Time for a kick-off!
No goal. A corner kick is taken
No goal; a dropped ball is given
Answer:
No goal. A corner kick is taken.
A corner kick would be taken. You cannot score on your own goal on a free kick. Since this is the case, the ball is treated as though it were out of bounds. The defending player was the last player to touch it, so a corner kick is awarded.
3. An attacking player (number 13) on team B didn't sleep well last night, and he's very tired. He's so tired that he curls up on the field near the corner arc and falls asleep in an offside position. A few minutes later, play returns to Team A's side of the field. A goal is scored, but the parents on Team A are screaming about an offside call. Do you make one?
Yes, you call an offside and allow Team A to take a free kick
No, because once offside is called, a goal cannot be scored
Yes, you call offside. The assistant referee should have signalled for offsides the minute number 13 crossed behind the defender
No. Number 13 was not involved in active play, so he is not offside
Answer:
No. Number 13 was not involved in active play, so he is not offside.
In order to be called offside, a player must be involved in active play. It is not an offense to be in the offside position. While the lying down is a bit preposterous, the FIFA rulebook shows an illustration of this happening.
4. The weather is getting a little bit crazy, but the game still goes on. The ball is placed for a direct free kick to team B. Number 0 goes to take the kick. The ball is kicked and flies directly to you, the referee. Because you are also a soccer player, you trap the ball from the air before realizing that you shouldn't have kicked it. You move away, embarassed. What's the call?
The direct free kick is re-taken
An indirect free kick is given to Team B
A dropped ball is given
Nothing, play is live
Answer:
Nothing, play is live
The referee is considered to be a part of the field, so play is live.
5. While walking on the field, you notice that you have dropped your whistle. Panicking, you stop the game and ask for help from the coaches. They are upset, but offer to help you look for your whistle. A minute later, with all the players searching, they can't find it anywhere. A fan from team B has a megaphone, and offers that instead. What do you do?
Talk to the coaches to see if they mind you just not calling anything
Keep searching until you find it. The referee needs a whistle!
Take it. There's nowhere within the Laws that says that a whistle must be used
Declare the game to be over. It would be unfair to both teams to ref without a whistle and looking for it would take too long.
Answer:
Take it. There's nowhere within the Laws that says that a whistle must be used
There really is nowhere that says that a whistle must be used. In fact, in the beginning days of soccer, a handkerchief was used.
6. It's Team A's turn to kick off, and Number 11 is the kicker. He kicks the ball, and it looks like it's heading for the goal. Unfortunately, the weather has continued to get worse, and the wind has picked up considerably. The wind blows the ball against the crossbar, and then completely changes direction and brings it back to the center. While the teams stand bewildered, Number 11 starts to dribble the ball up the field. What happens?
Goal kick
The kick-off is retaken.
Indirect free kick to Team B
Dropped ball
Answer:
Indirect free kick to Team B.
The ball may not be touched twice by the same player on a restart. This is the same for kick-offs.
7. The weather has gotten too out-of-hand in the your opinion. You postpone the game and the coaches agree to start, once the wind has died down. In 10 minutes not a twig branch is blowing, so you head back out to the field. The rules of competition say that you start the game with however much time you had left. How do you restart the game?
Throw In
Kick-off
Dropped Ball
Goal kick
Answer:
Dropped Ball.
This is another situation where a dropped ball would be given. Restarts after weather conditions are not mentioned in the Laws of the Game book.
